The inspection of the blades of the wind turbines becomes more automated, fast and safe with the utilization of new technologies.
An innovative inspection program using drones developed by the Greek air inspection company “IDS – Industrial Drone Services” was tested on Wednesday, June 11, 2020 at the demonstration park of K.A.P.E. (Center for Renewable Energy Sources).
Combining specialized drones with its flight design know-how, IDS has developed an innovative automated inspection platform offering maximum accuracy, speed, quality and safety.
According to the measurements and tests carried out at the CRES, 15 minutes is enough for a complete inspection of the 19-meter-long blades. The flight covered all 4 sides of the blade, capturing in detail their entire surface, while the staff supervised the flight from the ground with absolute safety.
This method of data collection allows blade experts to evaluate and measure the dimensions of problems found on the blades, as well as to compile a detailed inspection report.
This new method offers the possibility for fast, low-cost, safe and frequent inspections, contributing to the efficient maintenance and good operation of each WTG. At the same time, reduction of inspection costs and risk is achieved, as well as improvement of the WTG efficiency, which are an important factor for the strengthening of the investments in RES.
